Day eleven: Friends in high places
If you like to eat, it pays to know a chef. If you like to cook, it pays to know a kind chef. I know a kind chef. And when I showed him the mango chutney I had made, he sprinkled a little of his magic dust on it and transformed it from decent to [...]
Yes, there will be a SECOND free contest!
But, first, let’s deal with this one by announcing the TWO winners of my first ever FREE cookbook contest! Yep, the contest was so much fun, I picked TWO winners! And the winners are …
Taking stock
Taking stock … get it? Perfect pun for the culinary student, don’t you think? Well, let’s assume you said “yes!” You know where I’ve been and what I’ve done at school; heaven knows, that’s what this blog is about. So what I want to talk about is what the future holds for me. See, I [...]
Day ten: Death by mustard
One of the bonuses of going to a culinary school is, sometimes, you get to eat at the school restaurant (actually, I’ll get to work there in the next term). The food there is always good. Twitter contest to win FREE cookbook!
You have been so generous in your support of my blog (which, believe me, has been a real help on those days when I despaired I would ever learn how to cut straight!) that I wanted to thank you. So … I am hosting a contest where you can win a FREE cookbook. Here’s how [...]
Day eight: Where I learn the true meaning of culinary school

Only, yesterday, our salad making was interrupted by the Ansul system, which promptly shut down the kitchen and [...]
Day seven: Salad si? Salad NO!
Welcome to culinary school where, just like in a restaurant kitchen, the unexpected can happen any day, at any time. Like, say, when you are in the middle of salad production. As I was. Then, suddenly, was not.
So who is the typical cooking school student?
One of the questions I get asked with some frequency is who the typical cooking student is. And, you know, it is hard to say. But I’ve taken a crack at it. And it’s an interesting bunch.
Day six: Mayonnaise, resume, and three-hours worth of exhaustion
This was one of those disjointed days, where I lurched from event to event. Not all of them culinary-related. Let me explain.
