Day twenty-nine: My second day as Sous Chef – think it’s any better than my first?

Here are the highlights of my day:

  • Other Guy cut off the tip of his finger and Chef Sideburns got a photograph of his fingertip on the cutting board, next to his partially sliced bread
  • An hour later, Chef Sideburns went home, sick according to Chef Sideburns or hung over according to Chef Peacock
  • I made a last minute fritter batter and aioli
  • Two hours later Chef Peacock made me clean out the reach in and I found some leftover fritter batter and aioli I could have used, instead
  • We only had 13 covers (people), plus a few extra entrees for hungry school Chef’s
  • We never got to eat and only got to drink once our shift was over, as usual

Day twenty-six: I’m filthy and furious

March 29, 2010

The day started and ended with unhappiness.

At the start of the day, the unhappiness was Mama’s who told me, after the events of yesterday, she was reevaluating the industry. She says she never wants to work in a restaurant now. And she is not even sure she wants anything to do with anything culinary ever again. She said school has taken all the fun out of cooking for her.

Poor Mama.

As for the unhappiness at the end of the day, well that belongs to me.
